Richard Ahnert, Messenger (2012)
~
Richard Ahnert’s anthropomorphic art is both whimsical and brilliantly provocative. This Toronto-based artist paints intriguing images of animals engaged in activities one might expect of weary modern-day city dwellers. While his work harkens back to the playful (and disturbing) posed taxidermy of the Victorian era, Ahnert’s paintings engage the viewer with considerable satire and reflection. The images here provide only a small glimpse of his range and more of Ahnert’s fascinating paintings can be seen at his website, MyCanvas.ca: Paintings by Richard Ahnert.

Really like it!
Symbolism aside – does he have a touch of Dali in him?
Great point. There’s definitely an element of surrealism to his artwork.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i really like this one, i had not heard of this artist before ty!
Yes, his art is out there, in a good way!
Great stuff, never heard of him before. Thanks for the post and the link to his website.
Cool! 🙂

fabulous and unique artwork!
Fabulouso!
I enjoyed this post very much Brett. Thanks for bringing another “new” artist to my attention.
Dan, thanks!
Fantastic paintings! You know … The cornflake company should put the feed painting on their box .. Would make eating cornflakes way more enjoyable! 😄
That would be cool!
Vraiment intéressant, great ..
Tres bien! Merci!
The images are fabulous. I particularly find the smoking female rabbit disturbing for some reason.
I agree. I’m not sure what it is about that image but it strikes me the same way.
I wonder if that was his intention? Do you know the artist Michael Sowa? His images of animals in human settings are generally more benign but also sometimes disturbing.
Katherine, I’ve not heard of him until you mentioned and I just now looked up some of his art. I see the similarities. Thanks for making that connection for me! 🙂
And thank you for alerting me to this artist’s work, Brett!
A great collection!
🙂
The Cornflakes one is my favourite.
That and the goat and his dog.
They’re very cool!
Delightful!…. Very skillful and playful at the same time, I had never heard of him, ..surprizing
🙂
Cool post, Brett!
Thanks!
Aren’t they brilliant? The rooster eating the cornflakes, the rabbit lighting up! The lion!!
Very brilliant!
